Reasons You Should Know RTA Car Insurance Rules Dubai, UAE

When you’re aware of RTA car insurance rules in Dubai, UAE, you can protect yourself against penalties. You can also ensure your safety on the road when you follow the laws.

Besides this, you are always prepared for the unforeseen situations on the road, without having to handle unwelcome financial blows. Finally, this knowledge can help you smooth the claim process. This is because you will know which types of repair options are available for you.

Let’s understand the key rules!

Important RTA Car Insurance Rules in Dubai - 2025

Here are some major RTA car insurance rules in Dubai to be aware of —

1. Mandatory Requirement

Motor insurance is mandatory in Dubai. You need to have at least a third-party liability insurance policy. It ensures you can pay for third-party damages in case of an accident. However, if you have an outstanding car loan, most lenders would require you to get comprehensive insurance cover to protect the investment.

You cannot get multiple cars insured under the same policy.

Points to be Noted — Renew Car Insurance on Time!

  • You should renew your motor insurance on time, near the policy expiration date
  • You can also renew your policy within a 30-day grace period after it expires
  • After this period, your policy will lapse along with the accumulated benefits
  • Not renewing on time can also lead to legal consequences

2. Pre-requisite for Car Registration

You need to renew your car registration (Mulkiya) every year. For this, however, you need to renew your policy in advance. It’s because your Mulkiya contains your renewed policy number. You can renew your Mulkiya in just 7 working days of getting your insurance activated. Note that this is specific to Dubai — the requirement may vary as per your Emirate.

3. Car Specifications

Your car insurance premiums depend on your car’s specifications. If you have a GCC-spec car, the premium will be lower. GCC-specific cars have particular features to meet the region’s requirements —

  • Strong windscreen
  • Strong engine
  • Robust air conditioning

If you have a non-GCC-spec vehicle, the premium is higher.

Tip: To recognise whether your car is GCC-spec, check the engine number on your Mulkiya.

4. Repair Types

Another Dubai RTA car insurance rule is how you can get your vehicle repaired. There are 3 types of repairs — agency, premium garage, and garage.

  • For the first 2 years of your purchase of a brand new car, you can get it repaired at an authorised agency. Here, original parts are used.
  • Third year onwards, you would need your provider’s approval. The eligibility from the 3rd year depends on the number of claims you have filed.
  • If your car is 3 years or older, it is repaired in premium garages from the list provided by your insurer. Once your vehicle starts getting repaired at premium garages, it can no longer be taken to an authorised agency. Once your car is 7 years or older, you will need approval.
  • 7th year onwards, if you don’t get premium garage approval, your car will be repaired in local garages.

5. Fines Related to Driving without Car Insurance

Driving without valid motor insurance in Dubai has serious consequences. You can face a fine of AED 500. Additionally, RTA will levy 4 black points on your driving licence. Finally, your vehicle can be impounded for 7 days.

6. Orange Card

If you’re a frequent traveller to Oman, you can go for comprehensive car insurance. Here, you can include an Oman extension cover add-on to your policy. It will cover the damages to the insured vehicle. However, note that for third-party liability cover, you need an Orange card at the border.
