Yes. Roadside assistance is included automatically in all three GIG Gulf car insurance plans. Here is what is covered:
| Service | What GIG Provides |
|---|---|
| Towing | Tow or transport your vehicle to the nearest authorised workshop after a breakdown or accident |
| On-Road Removal | Arrange removal if the vehicle cannot move on a paved road (up to AED 1,100 for crane use; extra cost borne by insured) |
| Off-Road Recovery | Recovery if stuck off-road, overturned or fallen off a slope — daytime only, 4WD vehicles only, no desert events |
| Flat Tyre | A GIG-approved technician changes the tyre (spare tyre/tools not provided) |
| Battery | Jump-start by a GIG-approved technician |
| Lockout | Attempt to open the vehicle lock under appropriate authority supervision |
Important: Off-road recovery requires the vehicle to have four-wheel drive capability and to be used as per the manufacturer's guide. Vehicles in desert events or rallies are excluded.
What is NOT Covered by GIG Gulf Car Insurance?
Knowing what is excluded is just as important as knowing what is covered. Here are the key exclusions across all GIG Gulf motor insurance policies:
Own Damage Policy Exclusions (Motor Perfect & Prestige)
- Indirect losses or depreciation from normal use or mechanical/electrical breakdown
- Tyre damage, if it does not occur at the same time as damage to the rest of the vehicle

- War, terrorism, nuclear events, civil commotion, invasion
Third-Party Exclusions (All Policies)
- Accidents outside the UAE (absent Oman extension)

How to File a Car Insurance Claim with GIG Gulf?
With GIG Gulf, the claims process is quite simple. Here is what to do step by step:
Step-by-Step: After an Accident
- Call the traffic police immediately and wait at the scene. Do not move the car if it blocks investigations, but ensure you are not obstructing traffic unnecessarily.
- Get a police report. This report is essential. Workshops will only repair damage listed on the report. If there is a bodily injury or personal property damage, make sure that these details are included on the report.
- Note: If multiple accidents caused damage to the same vehicle, you need separate police reports for each incident.
How to Register Your GIG Gulf Motor Insurance Claim
- Option 1 - Go to an approved workshop: Take your driving licence, vehicle registration card and police report to any GIG-approved workshop. A GIG desk at the workshop will register your claim immediately.
- Option 2 - Call the toll-free number: 800 292 - available 24 hours a day.
- Option 3 - Online: Visit www.giggulf.ae, log in, enter your policy details, upload the police report and submit.
What Happens After You Register the Claim?
- A GIG surveyor at the workshop begins the inspection immediately.
- If you have a ‘hire car cover’, GIG arranges the replacement car at the workshop.
- You can track claim status at giggulf.ae or by calling 800 292 (Sunday–Thursday: 8 am–10 pm; Saturday: 8 am–5 pm).
- GIG sends SMS and email updates on your claim status.
What Happens in a Total Loss?
A vehicle is declared a total loss when repair costs exceed 50% of the vehicle's depreciated value. In this case:
- GIG informs you of the total loss declaration.
- You transfer vehicle ownership to GIG. Provide the official ownership transfer letter from the Traffic Department.
- GIG aims to issue the settlement within 5 working days of receiving the transfer letter.
- GIG pays you the insured value minus applicable depreciation and excess.
Note: If the vehicle chassis is damaged or structural columns need cutting, tightening, or welding, the vehicle is automatically classified as total loss — regardless of repair cost percentage.
What if the Accident Goes to Court?
If police refer the case to court (common in death, bodily injury or traffic law violation cases), GIG will work to start repairs quickly, but cannot release the vehicle from the repairer until the final court judgment. Contact GIG immediately if this happens as they will arrange legal representation.
How is Your GIG Gulf Car Insurance Premium Calculated?
GIG Gulf calculates your premium based on several factors:
- Age of the driver
- Length of driving experience
- Claims history (No Claim Discount history)
- Location / Emirate of registration
- Value of the vehicle
- Type of vehicle

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the car insurance be in a different name from the vehicle registration?
No. The traffic department will only register a vehicle in the name stated on the certificate of motor insurance. The policyholder must be the main driver and registered owner and must have a financial interest in the vehicle.
Can GIG Gulf refuse to pay because you reported the accident late?
No. Because insurance premiums are linked to the driver's profile, the existing policy must be cancelled. The new owner will need a new policy. A refund of unused premium follows the Short Rate Schedule.
Is there a time limit for making a claim or filing a lawsuit?
Yes. Any lawsuit arising from a GIG Gulf policy cannot be filed more than 3 years after the date of the accident or after the parties became aware of the damage and the person responsible for it.
Does GIG Gulf cover natural disasters like floods?
Third-party policies exclude natural disasters. Motor Perfect and Motor Prestige include Riot, Storm & Flood cover automatically. This covers floods, storms, typhoons, cyclones, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. However, formal 'Natural Disasters' as defined in the base UAE unified wording (which require a government decree) are excluded from the base policy. Furthermore, the Riot, Storm & Flood extension covers the broader weather events.
What is the ambulance payment GIG makes after accidents?
GIG Gulf can pay up to AED 6,770 to the ambulance and medical transport provider for each physically injured or deceased person treated and transported as a result of an accident involving a GIG-insured vehicle. This may happen regardless of whether the injured party is excluded from main coverage.
Is there a minimum death benefit for the insured or driver?
Yes. If the insured, the driver, or any otherwise-excluded person is covered under an agreement, the minimum death benefit is AED 200,000 per person.
Can GIG Gulf settle claims without going to court?
Yes. GIG Gulf can, at its expense, conduct judicial and settlement proceedings and enter into reconciliation on behalf of the insured — provided the insured cooperates and provides the necessary power of attorney.
