What Does Comprehensive Car Insurance Cover in UAE?
Comprehensive covers nine things as standard. These are written into the Unified Policy.
- Accidental damage - Collision, being run into, overturning and any other accidental incident.
- Theft - The car is stolen or taken by robbery. You must report it to the police before you report it to the insurer.
- Fire and explosion - External fire, explosion, spontaneous combustion or a lightning strike.
- Flood and rain damage - Covered under accidental damage - as long as the rainfall has not been officially declared a natural disaster. See the note below.
- Storm damage - Wind and hail damage to panels, glass and paintwork.
- Vandalism - Deliberate damage caused by someone else - keying, smashed mirrors, slashed tyres alongside other damage.
- Glass damage - Windscreen and window breakage.
- Damage in transit - Loss while the car is on a transporter, on inland water or being loaded and unloaded by a lift or crane.
- Third-party liability - Injury or death you cause, plus property damage up to AED 2 million per accident.
Twelve exclusions are listed in Chapter Four of the Unified Policy. They apply to every comprehensive policy sold in the UAE, whichever insurer issues it.
- Driving without a valid license - No cover if the driver was unlicensed, held the wrong category or was suspended.
- Driving under the influence - Alcohol, narcotics or medication that affects control of the car. Once proven or admitted, the claim is dead.
- Declared natural disaster - Floods, storms, earthquakes and similar events that the competent authority has formally declared a natural disaster.
- Off-road driving - Damage away from a public road like dunes, wadis, private tracks. You need an off-road rider to be covered.
- Outside the UAE - Damage in Oman, Saudi Arabia or anywhere else, unless your policy carries a written geographical extension.
- Racing and speed tests - Any timed run or track event, where it is shown to be the cause of the damage.

- Overloading or wrong use - Carrying more passengers or weight than the license allows or using a private car commercially.
- War, riot and nuclear risk - War, invasion, civil commotion, insurrection, confiscation and radioactive contamination.
- Intentional damage - Damage you or your driver caused on purpose.
Q1. What does comprehensive insurance mean?
Ans. Comprehensive car insurance covers two sides of risk — damage that your car may cause to others and insured loss or damage to your own car. This own-damage part sits on top of the mandatory third-party liability cover, which is why it offers wider protection than a basic third-party-only plan.
Q2. Why purchase Comprehensive Car Insurance?
Ans. Comprehensive car insurance is an ideal choice of insurance in many different ways. It provides you coverage against third-party damages along with providing for damages done to you and your vehicle.
Q3. Why Comprehensive Car Insurance costs higher than Third-Party Car Insurance?
Ans. Comprehensive car insurance plans cover both your own vehicle and third-party damage. These plans are customizable according to a buyer’s need and you can add multiple add-ons for enhanced coverage that is why they attract a higher premium. On the other hand, third-party car insurance is the bare minimum that a driver must have before hitting the road. It covers only third-party damages.
Q4. How to convert a third-party car insurance plan into a comprehensive car insurance plan?
Ans. You can convert your third-party car insurance plan into a comprehensive car insurance plan at the time of policy renewal. You can simply pay an additional premium for the comprehensive car insurance policy instead of renewing the third-party car insurance policy again.
Q5. Which is the best comprehensive car insurance in the UAE?
Ans. You can find several companies that offer the best comprehensive car insurance coverage in the UAE. The list includes Watania Takaful, GIG Gulf Insurance, Orient Insurance, Sukoon Insurance, and more.
Q6. What is not covered under comprehensive cover?
Ans. A comprehensive car insurance policy does not cover normal wear and tear and damage due to driving under the influence. It also doesn’t provide coverage if you use the car for criminal activities or purposes other than its intended use.
Q7. How much is comprehensive insurance in the UAE?
Ans. Comprehensive car insurance in the UAE generally costs between AED 1,200 to AED 5,000 per year. The exact price depends on a few things like the type of car you drive, its value, how old it is, your driving history and mor
