What Is Comprehensive Car Insurance?

Comprehensive car insurance is one policy that carries two separate covers: own damage and third-party liability.

Own damage means the insurer pays to repair or replace your own vehicle after a covered incident. Under Chapter Two of the Unified Loss and Damage Policy, that includes collision, overturning, fire, explosion, lightning, theft, robbery and deliberate damage by a third party.

Third-party liability pays the people you hurt and the property you damage. The Unified Third Party Liability Policy sets the limits and every insurer in the UAE applies the same ones.

What Happened Maximum the Insurer Pays
Damage to another person's vehicle or property AED 2,000,000 per accident, no matter how many people are affected
Death or bodily injury to a third party The amount the court awards — there is no cap
Death of your spouse, parent or child AED 200,000 per person
Ambulance and medical transport to hospital AED 6,770 per injured person
Loss of use for the innocent driver (replacement car) Up to AED 300 a day, for a maximum of 15 days

How Does Comprehensive Car Insurance Work in the UAE?

Comprehensive car insurance works through the police report. In the UAE, the police decide who caused the accident and your insurer follows that decision. Here is the full sequence. You are on Sheikh Zayed Road. You look down at your phone for two seconds and hit the car in front.

Step What Happens What You Need to Do
Step 1: Report it Police attend or you file through the Dubai Police, Abu Dhabi Police or Sharjah Police app for minor damage with no injuries. Do not move the cars if anyone is hurt. Photograph both vehicles before anything is towed.
Step 2: Get your slip Police issue a colour-coded report. Red means you are at fault. Green means the other driver is. White means fault is undecided. Keep the digital copy. Your garage cannot start work without it.
Step 3: Tell your insurer You must notify the company as soon as reasonably possible. Call the claims line the same day or so.
Step 4: Survey The insurer sends the car to an approved workshop. A surveyor prices the damage. Ask whether the workshop is an agency or garage before you agree.
Step 5: Repair or write-off If repair costs pass 50% of the car's pre-accident value, it is a total loss by regulation, not by insurer choice. Check the insured value on your schedule now — a total loss is settled against that figure.
Step 6: Pay your excess You pay the fixed deductible on your schedule. The insurer pays the rest. You pay nothing if a green report proves the other driver caused it.

Now flip it. The other driver hits you and gets a red slip. Your own repair still goes through your comprehensive policy, but you keep your excess and, in most cases, your no-claims discount, because your insurer recovers the money from their insurer.

  • What Does Comprehensive Car Insurance Not Cover?

What Does Comprehensive Car Insurance Cover in UAE?

Comprehensive covers nine things as standard. These are written into the Unified Policy.

  • Accidental damage - Collision, being run into, overturning and any other accidental incident.
  • Theft - The car is stolen or taken by robbery. You must report it to the police before you report it to the insurer.
  • Fire and explosion - External fire, explosion, spontaneous combustion or a lightning strike.
  • Flood and rain damage - Covered under accidental damage - as long as the rainfall has not been officially declared a natural disaster. See the note below.
  • Storm damage - Wind and hail damage to panels, glass and paintwork.
  • Vandalism - Deliberate damage caused by someone else - keying, smashed mirrors, slashed tyres alongside other damage.
  • Glass damage - Windscreen and window breakage.
  • Damage in transit - Loss while the car is on a transporter, on inland water or being loaded and unloaded by a lift or crane.
  • Third-party liability - Injury or death you cause, plus property damage up to AED 2 million per accident.

Twelve exclusions are listed in Chapter Four of the Unified Policy. They apply to every comprehensive policy sold in the UAE, whichever insurer issues it.

  • Driving without a valid license - No cover if the driver was unlicensed, held the wrong category or was suspended.
  • Driving under the influence - Alcohol, narcotics or medication that affects control of the car. Once proven or admitted, the claim is dead.
  • Declared natural disaster - Floods, storms, earthquakes and similar events that the competent authority has formally declared a natural disaster.
  • Off-road driving - Damage away from a public road like dunes, wadis, private tracks. You need an off-road rider to be covered.
  • Outside the UAE - Damage in Oman, Saudi Arabia or anywhere else, unless your policy carries a written geographical extension.
  • Racing and speed tests - Any timed run or track event, where it is shown to be the cause of the damage.
  • Tyres alone - A blown tyre on its own is not covered. A blown tyre that also damages the car is.
  • Wear, breakdown and lost value - The drop in your car's market value after an accident and consequential losses, are not paid.
  • Overloading or wrong use - Carrying more passengers or weight than the license allows or using a private car commercially.
  • War, riot and nuclear risk - War, invasion, civil commotion, insurrection, confiscation and radioactive contamination.
  • Intentional damage - Damage you or your driver caused on purpose.

How Much Does Comprehensive Car Insurance Cost in the UAE?

Comprehensive car insurance in the UAE runs from about AED 1,300 to AED 5,000 a year for a private car. The floor is fixed by regulation. The ceiling is a percentage of your car's value.

Most drivers do not realise the price is bounded on both sides. The Central Bank publishes the exact numbers.

Vehicle Type Minimum Premium (13 months) Maximum Premium
Saloon / sedan AED 1,300 5% of the vehicle value
Four-wheel drive (SUV) AED 2,000 7% of the vehicle value
Pickup or van, up to 3 tonnes AED 1,550 7% of the vehicle value
Truck over 3 tonnes AED 2,000 9% of the vehicle value
Motorcycle up to 200cc AED 800 5% of the vehicle value
Motorcycle above 200cc AED 850 5% of the vehicle value

So a Nissan X-Trail valued at AED 90,000 cannot legally be quoted below AED 2,000 or above AED 6,300 for comprehensive cover.

What Is Deductible or Excess in Comprehensive Car Insurance in UAE?

The deductible, also called the excess, is the fixed amount you pay towards your own repair before the insurer pays the rest. It applies once per accident. In the UAE the deductible is capped by law. Your insurer can charge less than the cap. It cannot charge more.

Your Vehicle's Value Maximum Deductible Per Accident
Up to AED 50,000 AED 350
AED 50,001 to AED 100,000 AED 700
AED 100,001 to AED 250,000 AED 1,000
Above AED 250,000 AED 1,200
Above AED 500,000 AED 1,400
Private vehicle carrying 10 to 12 passengers AED 1,500
Private vehicle over 12 passengers or a rental vehicle AED 1,700

These figures apply to private vehicles seating up to nine people, which covers almost every private car in the country.

Agency Repair vs Non-Agency Repair - Which Should You Choose?

Agency repair sends your car to the brand's authorised dealership. Non-agency repair sends it to a garage in your insurer's approved network. The choice changes both your premium and what happens on claim day.

Parts used Genuine manufacturer parts Original or equivalent-grade parts
Premium Roughly higher The cheaper option
Usually offered for Cars in the first three years from registration Any age, most common after year three

Best for New, financed, luxury and low-volume brands Cars past three to five years and cars out of warranty

Comprehensive Car Insurance Add-ons in UAE

Add-ons are extra covers you buy on top of the standard policy for an additional premium. The Unified Policy calls them riders and it specifically allows insurers to sell them. Some are listed below -

Add-on What It Does
Agency repair Send your car to the brand dealership with genuine parts.
Off-road cover Covers damage away from a public road, including dunes and wadis.
GCC / Oman extension Extends own-damage cover across the border.

Q1. What does comprehensive insurance mean?

Ans. Comprehensive car insurance covers two sides of risk — damage that your car may cause to others and insured loss or damage to your own car. This own-damage part sits on top of the mandatory third-party liability cover, which is why it offers wider protection than a basic third-party-only plan.

Q2. Why purchase Comprehensive Car Insurance?

Ans. Comprehensive car insurance is an ideal choice of insurance in many different ways. It provides you coverage against third-party damages along with providing for damages done to you and your vehicle.

Q3. Why Comprehensive Car Insurance costs higher than Third-Party Car Insurance?

Ans. Comprehensive car insurance plans cover both your own vehicle and third-party damage. These plans are customizable according to a buyer’s need and you can add multiple add-ons for enhanced coverage that is why they attract a higher premium. On the other hand, third-party car insurance is the bare minimum that a driver must have before hitting the road. It covers only third-party damages.

Q4. How to convert a third-party car insurance plan into a comprehensive car insurance plan?

Ans. You can convert your third-party car insurance plan into a comprehensive car insurance plan at the time of policy renewal. You can simply pay an additional premium for the comprehensive car insurance policy instead of renewing the third-party car insurance policy again.

Q5. Which is the best comprehensive car insurance in the UAE?

Ans. You can find several companies that offer the best comprehensive car insurance coverage in the UAE. The list includes Watania Takaful, GIG Gulf Insurance, Orient Insurance, Sukoon Insurance, and more.

Q6. What is not covered under comprehensive cover?

Ans. A comprehensive car insurance policy does not cover normal wear and tear and damage due to driving under the influence. It also doesn’t provide coverage if you use the car for criminal activities or purposes other than its intended use.

Q7. How much is comprehensive insurance in the UAE?

Ans. Comprehensive car insurance in the UAE generally costs between AED 1,200 to AED 5,000 per year. The exact price depends on a few things like the type of car you drive, its value, how old it is, your driving history and mor
