Navigating visa regulations can be tricky, especially if you're in a foreign country.

If you find yourself in the UAE with an expired tourist visa, you can certainly face severe consequences such as fines, travel bans, and more. However, by taking timely action, you can avoid such difficulties.

This guide will help you understand what to do if your tourist visa expires in the UAE.

Understanding Visa Expiry and Overstaying

Let’s first understand these two key terms in our discussion here —

  • Visa Expiry: This refers to the end date of your permitted stay in the UAE. If you stay in the country beyond this date without renewing your visa, you can be subject to penalties.
  • Overstaying: This happens if you remain in the UAE after your visa has expired. Irrespective of whether you overstay for some days or weeks, you can incur hefty fines, penalties, and more.

What are the Consequences of Overstaying in the UAE?

When you stay even after your UAE visa expires, you can face the following —

  • Fines: Overstaying can result in daily fines, which can quickly add up.

This amount is AED 50 per day. So if you overstay for, say, even a week, the amount will go up to AED 350.

  • Legal Issues: As overstaying is illegal, it can lead to deportation or a ban from re-entering the UAE.
  • Poor Record: If you have an overstay on your record, it can affect future visa applications. This holds true whether you apply for a visa for the UAE or any other country.
  • Blacklist: Prolonged overstays can result in being blacklisted. This can completely restrict your future visits to the UAE.

What to Do After the UAE Visa Expiry?

If your visa has expired, act quickly to minimise penalties.

Here are the steps you should take —

  • Contact Authorities: Reach out to the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICP). You can get guidance on the next steps through their official website (icp.gov.ae/en/) or by dialling +971 2 4955555.
  • Extend or Renew Your Visa: If possible, apply for an extension or renewal through the ICP website.
  • Prepare to Exit: If you can't extend or renew your visa, make arrangements to leave the UAE as early as possible. You can also contact your embassy or consulate for assistance with the exit process and possible financial aid (if required).

How to Renew UAE Visa Online?

You can easily renew your UAE visa online. Here’s how —

  1.  Visit the ICP website and create an account.
  2. Login and navigate to the section for visas.
  3. Select the option to renew your visa.
  4. Enter the requested details and upload the documents.
  5. Pay the renewal fee.

You can also visit the website of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai. On the homepage, simply choose the option for ‘extending a tourist visa for a single or multiple trips’ and proceed.

What is the Cost of Renewing a Visa in the UAE?

Here are the fees for renewing a visa in the UAE —

  • Resident Visa: AED 100 per year, plus an issuance fee of AED 100 per year.
  • Visit Visa: AED 100 for the application and issuance fees.
  • Business Visa: AED 100 for the application and issuance fees.

Additional fees may apply for medical checks, Emirates ID, and professional assistance.

How to Avoid Overstaying in the UAE?

Follow these simple tips to avoid UAE visa expiry as well as overstays —

  • Monitor Expiry Dates: Regularly check your visa’s expiration date. You can also jot it down somewhere or set alarms so that you don’t forget.
  • Apply Early: Submit renewal applications at least 15 days before your visa expires.
  • Seek Professional Help: In case you’re near your visa expiry date and are not able to take any concrete steps on your own, have a word with lawyers, immigration consultants, or Government authorities (if needed).
What should I do if I realise my tourist visa is about to expire soon?

If your tourist visa is close to expiring, you should first check if you are eligible for an extension. If not, you should immediately make plans to leave the country.

Can I work in the UAE if my tourist visa has expired but I'm in the process of renewing it?

No, you cannot legally work in the UAE on a tourist visa. So whether your tourist or visit visa is active or expired, you cannot work in the UAE.

Are there any exceptions to the penalties for overstaying due to unforeseen circumstances like medical emergencies?

In cases of unforeseen circumstances such as medical emergencies, you might be able to appeal for leniency on penalties. However, in this case, the concerned authorities may ask you to provide supporting documents and proof of the emergency situation.

How long can I stay in the UAE if I apply for a visa extension?

UAE tourist visa extensions can usually go up to 60 days, granting a total of 90 days’ stay at a time.

What happens if my visa extension application is denied?

If your visa extension application is denied, you must leave the UAE before your visa expires to avoid overstaying penalties. In such cases, book return tickets at the earliest. In case you face any issues regarding the same, contact your embassy or consulate for assistance with your departure plans.
