Along with the ongoing coronavirus spread, another contagious disease has come to light – Tomato flu. The viral disease has emerged in Kerala, India. According to health experts, it is affecting children aged 5 and below. The name of the disease was given after observing its symptoms, usually red blisters and rashes that appear once the child is infected. Apart from this, the infected child feels dehydrated frequently. Although, until now, there isn’t a lot of information available on this, the doctors have recommended parents to keep a check on their wards. The infected children are advised to stay in isolation if any symptoms are found. Tomato flu is considered contagious and can spread rapidly from one individual to another. Read further to know about the issue in detail.

How to Identify the Signs of Tomato Flu?

Several symptoms have surfaced after a rapid increase in number of infections. Some primary and early signs include red blisters, high fever, dehydration, swelling of joints, body ache and skin irritation such as rashes. The symptoms are not limited to these. Some other signs of tomato flu are vomiting, sneezing, coughing and fatigue. Some patients may also experience abdominal cramps, nausea, runny nose and discolouration of knees, hands and buttocks. Have an immediate consultation with a doctor if you see any of the symptoms mentioned above.

Preventive Measures and Treatment

After observing the situation for a few days, doctors have prescribed general guidelines that the families can abide by. The infected people are advised to stay hydrated and maintain hygiene. Besides, the concerned parents must make sure their child does not scratch the rashes and blisters. In fact, the child should also keep itself hydrated all the time by drinking clean water. When discussing the treatment for the same, health officials stated that the flu is self-limiting and there is no specific cure for it.

Tomato Flu in the UAE

The latest update says that the tomato flu is restricted to children residing in Kollam, India. As of now, there have been no reports of tomato flu in the UAE. Nevertheless, it is advised to all parents to keep a check on their kids as the flu can spread rapidly.
