Umrah, often referred to as the “minor Hajj”, is a pilgrimage practiced by Muslims by travelling to the Great Mosque of Makkah (Mecca). While Umrah is ideally supposed to be performed during the month of Ramadan, the devotees can perform it at any time of the year. 

On July 30th, 2022 the Umrah season will resume following the successful Hajj season in Saudi Arabia. However, it should be kept in mind that an Umrah Visa would be required if you wish to undertake this pilgrimage.

Medical Requirements for Umrah Visa Application

All the pilgrims travelling for Umrah need to meet the criteria specified by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. Some of the mandatory requirements for Umrah are mentioned below –

  • COVID Testing - The pilgrims travelling for Umrah are required to provide a negative report for the PCR test and the test must be done 72 hours before leaving for Saudi Arabia. The pilgrims travelling on Visit Visas should have medical insurance that covers the treatment costs related to COVID-19 during their stay. 
  • Vaccine Requirements - Even though the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has lifted most COVID-19-associated restrictions, the pilgrims performing Umrah must provide a certificate of vaccination upon their arrival in the country. The approved vaccinations are –
  1. Moderna
  2. Janssen
  3. Pfizer/ BioNTech
  4. Oxford/ AstraZeneca

Note: Individuals who have been administered Covaxin, Sinopharm, and Sinovac would need to undergo an institutional quarantine of 3 days and submit a negative PCR test report after 48 hours from the date of the quarantine. 

  • Registration of Vaccine Status - As a pilgrim, you will be required to register your vaccine dosage on Saudi Arabia’s Muqeem platform at least 72 hours before departure. You should carry your duly attested, original vaccination certificate (attestation from the official health authorities). All the details will be verified before you board the plane or enter the country.
  • Norms of Social Distancing and Wearing Masks - Even though the major COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted in Saudi Arabia, the pilgrims still need to wear masks inside mosques and other indoor spaces. The masks, however, are not mandatory outdoors. 

Applying for Umrah Visa

As per the guidelines laid down by the Mistry of Hajj and Umrah, pilgrims should connect with the authorised tourism companies to get the best Umrah packages. They can then complete the visa requirements and schedule appointments to do Umrah and pray at Ar-Rawdhah Ash-Shareefah. 

To obtain an Umrah visa from the UAE, you will need to provide the following documents and fulfil the requirements mentioned below –

  • A duly filled original Umrah visa application form - The applicant must carefully read through the statements mentioned towards the end of the form and sign it 
  • Recent passport-sized coloured photograph against a white backdrop
  • A passport with 6 months’ validity from the date of submitting the Umrah visa application
  • A confirmed and non-refundable air ticket 
  • A proof of relationship if travelling with women and children as a Mahram -  the mahram should travel on the same flight as the women and children
  • A vaccination certificate for Meningococcal Meningitis - The vaccination certificate should not be issued in more than 3 years or less than 10 days before arrival in Saudi Arabia

One should keep in mind that the Umrah visa remains valid for only 30 days from the date of issuance. With that said, you can even apply for an Umrah visa online as it will be issued within 24 hours. 

Performing Umrah using a Tourist Visa - Is It Possible?

You can perform Umrah on a Tourist visa, although you would require a specific Umrah permit to perform the same. When you do Umrah on a tourist visa you can stay for a longer duration and would have permission for multiple entries. 

How to Get an Umrah Permit?

Pilgrims can get their Umrah permit using the Tawakkalna or Eatmarna application and can look for the appropriate time to perform Umrah based on the crowd and the time. To qualify for the permit, the applicants must be –

  • Fully vaccinated by any of the COVID-19 vaccines approved in Saudi Arabia 
  • Fully vaccinated by a vaccine that has the WHO approval but not that of Saudi Arabia - In such cases, they should have been administered with a booster dose 

Note – The Umrah permit will be cancelled if: 

  • The pilgrim is infected with COVID-19
  • The pilgrim has been in contact with an infected individual
  • The visa holder does not enter Saudi Arabia at least six hours before the Umrah booking date
