EV Water Ingress Claims in the UAE: What's Covered After Heavy Rain?

Comprehensive car insurance in the UAE covers water damage to your electric car after heavy rain. Third-party insurance does not. This rule comes from the Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy, issued under the Insurance Authority Board of Directors' Decision No. (25) of 2016 and now regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE.read more

The battery, however, is the tricky part. Some insurers treat battery water damage as 'consequential damage' and pay for it only if your policy wording includes it.

Does Car Insurance Cover Water Damage to an Electric Car in the UAE?

Yes, but only if you hold a comprehensive policy. Comprehensive insurance covers loss and damage to your own vehicle, including damage from heavy rain and flooding. Third-party liability (TPL) insurance is the legal minimum in the UAE. It pays only for damage your car causes to other people and their property. It pays nothing for your own flooded EV.

Policy Type Covers Rain/Flood Damage to Your EV? What It Pays For
Third-Party Liability (TPL) No Injury and property damage caused to others. Nothing for your own car.
Comprehensive Yes, in most heavy rain events Repair or replacement of your own vehicle, subject to policy terms and excess.
Comprehensive + EV add-ons Yes, with wider protection Battery cover, charging cable/wallbox cover, agency repair and roadside assistance.

There is one important condition. The Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy excludes accidents caused by natural disasters such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes. In practice, this exclusion applies only when a competent UAE authority officially declares the weather event a natural disaster.

The former UAE Insurance Authority clarified that insurers must cover rain damage under comprehensive policies unless such a declaration is made. Mohammed Mazhar Hamadeh, Head of the Motor Committee at the Emirates Insurance Federation, confirmed in 2025 that comprehensive policies automatically include rain and flood protection under their standard terms.

What is Water Ingress in an EV?

Water ingress means water or moisture entering sealed parts of your electric car. This includes the battery pack, the battery management system (BMS), the motor, the charging port, and the cabin. It usually happens when you drive through floodwater or park in a waterlogged area during heavy rain.

EV batteries are sealed to an Ingress Protection (IP) standard. Most EV battery packs carry an IP67 rating. IP67 means the pack can sit in one metre of water for up to 30 minutes without water entering. This protects you in normal rain and shallow puddles. It does not make your EV a submarine. Deep floodwater, standing water in basements, and fast-flowing water can still breach seals, corrode connectors, and damage the pack.

Which EV Parts Get Damaged in Heavy Rain or Floods?

Water attacks an EV differently from a petrol car. A petrol engine suffers from hydrolock. An EV suffers electrical and chemical damage.

Dubai Police listed electrical faults, water leakage, corrosion, and braking problems among the most common rain damage reported during the 2024 storms. For EVs, five components carry the biggest repair bills:

Component What Water Does to It
High-voltage battery pack Corrodes cells and busbars. Salt or dirty water raises short-circuit risk.
Battery Management System (BMS) Moisture triggers fault codes and shuts the car down.
Electric motor and inverter Water enters through damaged seals.
Charging port and connectors Corrosion stops safe charging.
Cabin electronics and interior Water soaks carpets, seats, control units.

Is the EV Battery Covered if Water Gets Inside?

It depends on your policy wording.

If floodwater directly damages the battery while the car is parked or driven normally, most UAE comprehensive policies treat it like any other accidental damage and pay for it. Problems start when the insurer classifies the battery damage as 'consequential damage'. This is damage that develops after the event, such as corrosion that appears weeks later or damage caused by restarting or charging the car after the flood. Many base policies exclude consequential damage.

Check three things in your policy schedule before the next storm:

  1. Battery cover. Some UAE insurers now sell EV-specific policies or add-ons that name the battery and BMS as covered items, including water ingress.
  2. Charging equipment cover. Certain EV policies extend to your charging cable and home wallbox.
  3. Consequential damage wording. Read the exclusions list. If consequential damage is excluded, ask the insurer in writing how a flooded battery would be handled.

If your policy does not name the battery, do not assume it is covered.

Why Did the April 2024 Rains Change EV Claims in the UAE?

Numbers explain the shift. The National Centre of Meteorology confirmed that Khatm Al Shakla in Al Ain received 254.8mm of rain in under 24 hours on 16 April 2024. That was the heaviest rainfall since the UAE records began in 1949. Dubai received 142mm in a day, which was close to its full annual average. Thousands of vehicles flooded. Dubai Police issued 1,000 vehicle damage certificates within the first two days of the storm alone.

EVs made the claims picture more expensive. Battery packs and specialised parts cost far more to repair than petrol engines, and this pushed up claim values and premiums.

How Do I File an EV Water Damage Claim in the UAE?

Follow these six steps. Speed and evidence decide most claims.

  1. Do not start, drive, or charge the car.
  2. Photograph everything. Capture the water level, the parking spot, the number plate, and the damage. Record a short video with the date visible.
  3. Report the damage to your insurer within 24 to 48 hours. Use the insurer's app or claims hotline and quote your policy number.
  4. Get the police certificate. In Dubai, apply online for the 'To Whom It May Concern' certificate for natural disasters. In Abu Dhabi, use the SAAED platform. In other emirates, contact the local police.
  5. Arrange recovery through the insurer.
  6. Track the claim in writing. Keep every email, estimate, and approval. Ask for the surveyor's report if the insurer disputes the battery damage.

Will My EV Be Declared a Total Loss After Flooding?

It happens more often with EVs than with petrol cars.

The battery pack is the single most expensive part of the vehicle. If the pack needs full replacement, the repair bill can pass the insurer's total loss threshold, which is commonly around 70% of the car's insured value in UAE policies. The insurer then writes the car off and pays you the insured value or market value stated in your policy, minus the excess.

Before you accept a settlement, check the sum insured in your policy schedule. If you insured the car at a low value to save on premiums, your payout drops by the same amount.

FAQs on EV Water Damage Insurance in the UAE

Is it safe to drive an electric car in the rain in the UAE?

Yes. EV batteries and high-voltage systems are sealed. Most packs meet the IP67 standard. Normal rain poses no shock risk. Still, avoid deep or fast-flowing floodwater, exactly as you would in a petrol car.

Can I charge my EV in the rain?

Yes, charging in the rain is safe. Charging connectors and ports are weather-sealed. Current flows only after the plug locks and the car and charger complete safety checks.

Does third-party insurance cover EV rain damage in the UAE?

No. Third-party liability insurance covers only injury and property damage you cause to others. It pays nothing for your own flooded EV, its battery, or its electronics. Only a comprehensive policy covers rain and flood damage to your own vehicle.

How long do I have to report a flood damage claim?

Report within 24 to 48 hours of discovering the damage. Most UAE insurers set this window in the policy wording, with late reporting being a common rejection reason. The Unified Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy allows late notice only with an acceptable reason.

Do I need a police report for a rain damage claim?

Yes, in practice. Insurers ask for official proof that natural causes damaged the car. In Dubai, this is the online 'To Whom It May Concern' (Natural Disasters) certificate from Dubai Police, which costs AED 95 and arrives within one to two working days.

Will a flood claim increase my EV insurance premium?

Yes, it can. A paid claim usually removes your no-claims discount at renewal. Moreover, UAE motor premiums have risen since the April 2024 floods because of higher repair costs, especially for EV batteries. Compare quotes at renewal and ask how the claim affects your discount.
