Used EV Battery Health Certificates and Insurance in the UAE
A battery health certificate tells you how much charge a used electric car’s battery can still hold. The result comes as a percentage called State of Health or SoH. This one number decides a lot. The battery makes up 30% to 50% of an EV’s value. Insurers price their policies around it too.read more

Used EV listings in the UAE grew 41% in 2025, according to a report by Khaleej Times. So thousands of buyers here are now dealing with these two questions for the first time: how do I check the battery and what will insurance actually cover? This guide answers both.
What is an EV Battery Health Certificate?
It is a report from a diagnostic test. The tester plugs a device into the car’s OBD port, which is under the dashboard in most cars. The device connects to the Battery Management System and reads voltage, temperature, charging history, and cell data. The whole test takes a few minutes. You get a PDF at the end.
The main figure on the report is the State of Health or SoH percentage. If it says 90%, the battery now holds 90% of the energy it held when the car was new. Mileage alone does not tell you much about an EV. Two cars with the same mileage can have very different batteries, depending on how they were charged and where they were parked. The SoH test is how you find out.
Is a Battery Health Certificate Mandatory in the UAE?
No. As of mid-2026, no UAE authority asks for a battery health certificate when you sell, register, or insure a used EV. It is a voluntary document.
Why is Battery Health Important for Used EVs in the UAE?
Two reasons. The battery is the most expensive part of the car. And the UAE’s heat makes it wear out faster.
Geotab studied more than 22,700 EVs in a report published in January 2026. It showed that batteries lose about 1.5-2.3% of capacity per year on average. Cars in hot climates lost an extra 0.4% per year on top of that. Cars parked in direct sun at a high charge level did the worst. That is normal daily life for a car in Dubai or Abu Dhabi in August.
The market side is important too. Dubai had more than 40,600 registered electric vehicles by mid-2025. Around 345,000 new cars were sold across the UAE in 2025, and pure EVs made up about 3.4% of them. Those cars will reach the used market over the next few years. Used EV listings already rose 41% in 2025.
What Does a Battery Health Certificate Include?
A good report covers more than the SoH number. UAE warranty specialists say a proper pre-purchase battery report should include these four things:
What It Shows
Why It Shows
State of Health (SoH) – current capacity vs. new, as a percentage
Lower SoH means less range. It also affects resale value and warranty claims.
Charging history – how often the car used DC fast charging
Frequent fast charging in hot weather wears the battery faster.
Stored fault codes and warnings
Old thermal events or cell imbalances can point to future failure.
Temperature exposure records
UAE summers push degradation up. These records show how hard the battery has worked.
What is a Good SoH for a Used EV?
Above 90% is a strong result for a car that is a few years old. Between 85% and 90% is acceptable if the price reflects the lost range. Below 80%, buyer guides recommend a large discount or walking away, especially when the battery warranty is close to its end.
One thing to keep in mind. The same percentage means different things on different cars. 80% of a 500 km range still covers most daily driving in the UAE. 80% of a short-range older EV may not manage a Dubai to Abu Dhabi round trip. Calculate the actual kilometres, not just the percentage.
How Do You Get a Battery Health Certificate in the UAE?
There are three routes to get a battery health certificate in the UAE:
The brand’s agency or dealer. Authorised dealerships run factory-level diagnostics and can issue an official SoH reading.
An independent EV specialist or certified diagnostic centre. Several testing tools used in the trade are certified by CARA, the European car remarketing association. These tests produce a report within minutes.
The car itself. Many EVs show battery data in their settings menu and brands, such as BYD, Tesla, and Hyundai, share health data through their owner apps. This costs nothing. Use it as a first filter, then confirm with a proper test before you pay for the car.
Does Car Insurance in the UAE Cover the EV Battery?
A comprehensive EV policy in the UAE pays for battery damage from a crash, a fire, or a flood, up to the insured value of the car. Gradual capacity loss is a different story. Insurers class it as normal wear and tear, and no standard policy covers it. If the capacity drops below the manufacturer’s threshold during the warranty period, that claim goes to the manufacturer, not the insurer.
Third-party liability is the legal minimum in the UAE. It pays for damage you cause to others and nothing for your own car. On a used EV, where the battery is most of the car’s value, that gap is expensive.
Before you sign a policy, check three things in the wording:
Whether battery damage is covered up to full replacement cost
Whether the policy includes agency repair at an EV-certified workshop
Whether sensor and camera calibration is included after a repair, since even small EV repairs often need it
Read the battery clause in the policy. Accident damage should be covered to full replacement value and the wear-and-tear exclusion should be clearly worded.
Is a battery health certificate required to sell a used EV in the UAE?
No. As of 2026, it is voluntary. No UAE authority requires it for sale, registration, or insurance. Market data from Europe shows cars with a published battery report sell faster than cars without one, which is why many sellers now provide it anyway.
Does UAE car insurance cover EV battery replacement?
Comprehensive car insurance policies cover battery damage from accidents, fire, or flood, up to the car’s insured value. They do not cover gradual capacity loss, which counts as wear and tear. Capacity loss falls under the manufacturer warranty.
How much does an EV battery health test cost?
Checking the car’s own app or menu is free. A professional test costs about the same as a standard pre-purchase inspection, and pricing varies by provider. The test itself takes only a few minutes once the device is connected.
What SoH percentage should I look for in a used EV?
90% or higher is a strong result on a car up to five years old. 85% to 90% is fine if the price reflects it. Below 80%, buyer guides recommend a large discount or a different car, particularly if the battery warranty ends soon.
Do EVs need RTA testing in Dubai?
Yes. EVs older than three years need the annual RTA technical inspection before registration renewal, the same as petrol cars. New cars are exempt for the first three years for the first owner. The test covers safety and roadworthiness, not battery capacity.
