What is RTA Vehicle Inspection in Dubai?

RTA vehicle inspection is a mandatory technical test carried out by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). It’s to confirm that your car is safe to drive, environmentally compliant, and legally roadworthy.

Every vehicle older than three years must pass this test before its registration card (Mulkiya) can be renewed. The test is also required before an ownership transfer, before exporting a vehicle out of the UAE, and after a long registration lapse.

The RTA does not directly operate every inspection bay. It licenses several private testing operators across Dubai. The biggest network is Tasjeel, run by ENOC. Other approved operators include Shamil (Emarat), Wasel, Al Mumayaz, Al Shirawi, Tamam, and AG Cars. Fees are set by the RTA and are the same across all operators — the only real difference is location and wait times.

Important: Vehicles under 3 years old are fully exempt from periodic technical inspection. Testing becomes compulsory from the fourth year onwards.

When is RTA Vehicle Inspection Required?

The inspection is required in four specific situations:

  1. Annual registration renewal — for all privately owned vehicles older than 3 years
  2. Ownership transfer (buying or selling a used car in Dubai)
  3. Vehicle export — before registering a car for export outside the UAE
  4. Re-registration — if your registration has lapsed for two or more years

Is Booking Mandatory for RTA Vehicle Inspection?

Yes. Since June 2, 2025, pre-booking is mandatory for vehicle inspections at 27 of Dubai's 28 technical testing centres. The only exception is Tasjeel Hatta, which still accepts walk-ins without any extra charge. This rule applies regardless of which testing operator — Tasjeel, Shamil, Wasel, or any other — you choose.

The mandatory booking policy was rolled out after a successful six-month pilot at Tasjeel Al Qusais and Al Barsha, which showed a 46% reduction in average customer waiting times. RTA expanded it to all other centres on June 2, 2025.

Who is Exempt from the Booking Requirement?

Two groups are exempt from the mandatory online booking rule, in line with RTA's inclusive service policy:

  1. Senior citizens
  2. People of Determination

Both groups can visit any testing centre without a prior appointment and without paying the AED 100 walk-in surcharge.

How to Book an RTA Vehicle Inspection Appointment?

There are two ways to book: through the RTA Dubai app on your phone or through the official website at rta.ae. Both methods are free of charge and available 24 hours a day.

Method 1: Book via the RTA Dubai App

Download the RTA Dubai app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store if you do not have it already.

  • Step1- Open the app and tap Services from the bottom navigation menu.
  • Step2- Go to Vehicle Licensing > Vehicle Testing.
  • Step3- Log in using your UAE Pass, RTA username, or password.
  • Step4- Select your vehicle from the list linked to your account. If your vehicle is registered in another emirate, manually enter the plate details.
  • Step5- Choose inspection type: Select the correct category, like light vehicle, motorcycle, heavy vehicle or any specialist test.
  • Step6- Pick your centre and time slot: Browse available testing centres near you and select an open time slot that suits you.
  • Step7- Review and confirm: Check all details, then confirm the booking. Pay any applicable fee online by card.
  • Step8- Receive confirmation: You will get an SMS and email with your booking reference.

Method 2: Book via the RTA Website (rta.ae)

  • Step1- Open a browser and go to www.rta.ae.
  • Step1- Navigate to: Services > Vehicles & Transport > Vehicle Testing & Registration > Book Vehicle Inspection.
  • Step1- Log in with your UAE Pass for the fastest experience or use your existing RTA account credentials.
  • Step1- Enter vehicle details or select from your registered vehicles.
  • Step1- Choose your preferred centre and pick an available date and time slot.
  • Step1- Confirm and pay. You will receive an email confirmation immediately.

Which Documents Do You Need for RTA Vehicle Inspection?

Bring these documents to your inspection appointment. Missing any one of them can delay your test or result in a rejected RTA booking test:

Document Details
Emirates ID Original — the inspector will verify your identity
Vehicle Registration Card (Mulkiya) Current or last issued Mulkiya for your vehicle
Valid Car Insurance Certificate Third-party liability minimum; comprehensive is accepted
Booking Confirmation SMS or email confirmation with your appointment reference
Power of Attorney (if applicable) Required if you are presenting someone else's vehicle on their behalf

Tip: Renew your motor insurance before booking the inspection. The RTA system will reject renewals if vehicle insurance has expired. UAE law requires all vehicles to carry at least third-party liability coverage.

Where are the RTA Vehicle Testing Centres in Dubai?

Dubai has 28 official technical vehicle testing centres spread across the emirate. They are operated by multiple RTA-licensed providers. Find below the major operators and some key locations:

Operator Key Locations in Dubai Walk-in Allowed?
Tasjeel (ENOC) Al Qusais, Al Barsha, Al Quoz, Al Twar, Al Mankhool, Hatta Yes (Hatta only; others pre-book or +AED 100)

Tamam Select Dubai locations Pre-book recommended

Always verify the latest centre locations and operating hours on the RTA Dubai app or rta.ae before your visit. Centres may update their schedules during Ramadan, public holidays, or peak seasons.

How Much Does RTA Vehicle Inspection Cost in Dubai?

RTA sets all inspection fees. The rates are identical across all testing operators like Tasjeel, Shamil, Wasel, or any other. Here is the full cost breakdown as of 2026:

Fee Type Amount (AED) Notes
Light vehicle inspection 150 Cars, SUVs, pick-ups under 3.5 tonnes
Heavy vehicle inspection 200 Trucks, buses, heavy equipment
Knowledge & Innovation fee 20 Mandatory for all inspections
Walk-in surcharge (if applicable) 100 At 19 centres where walk-in is available but not pre-booked

Total government fees, if everything is settled in one visit, is approximately AED 520–570, covering inspection + Knowledge & Innovation fee + registration renewal + optional courier. Outstanding traffic fines and Salik tolls are separate.

What Happens if Your Car Fails the RTA Inspection?

Failing the inspection does not mean your car is permanently off the road. The RTA gives you 31 days to fix the listed faults and return for a re-test at the same centre.

Common reasons vehicles fail the RTA inspection

  1. Tyre tread depth below 1.6 mm or tyres older than 6 years
  2. Faulty or worn brake pads and discs
  3. Any broken or non-functioning lights (headlights, indicators, brake lights)
  4. Active OBD fault codes, especially ABS faults (direct fail)
  5. Emission levels exceeding regulatory limits
  6. Frame damage or significant underbody rust
  7. Expired or missing safety equipment (fire extinguisher, safety triangle)
  8. Cracked windscreen obstructing the driver's line of sight

If you do not re-test within 31 days, you will be blocked from renewing your registration and can face a traffic fine plus a daily road-usage charge until the vehicle is cleared.

Can Someone Else Bring My Car for Inspection?

Yes. The registered owner does not have to be physically present at the testing centre. However, the person presenting the vehicle must carry their own valid Emirates ID and if the vehicle owner is not present — a Power of Attorney (POA) authorising them to handle vehicle transactions on the owner's behalf.

The driver presenting the car must also have a valid UAE driving licence. The car cannot be delivered by someone without a licence. If you appoint a driver or service, confirm they carry the POA documents.

Can I Get My Dubai-Registered Car Inspected in Another Emirate?

No. Cross-emirate testing is not permitted. If your vehicle is registered in Dubai, it must be inspected at an RTA-approved testing centre in Dubai. Similarly, Abu Dhabi-registered or Sharjah-registered vehicles must be tested in their respective emirate. Registration renewal, ownership transfer, and export registration all follow the same rule.

If you have moved within the UAE and your vehicle is still registered in another emirate, you must either re-register it in your current emirate of residence or travel to an approved centre in the emirate of registration for the test.

Disclaimer: Fees, booking rules and centre details are set by the RTA and may change. Always confirm current rates and requirements on the RTA Dubai app or rta.ae before your visit. This article is informational and does not constitute legal advice.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I book an RTA vehicle inspection online?

Log into the RTA Dubai app or go to rta.ae, navigate to Services > Vehicle Licensing > Vehicle Testing. Select your vehicle, choose an inspection type, pick a testing centre and time slot, then confirm and pay. You will receive a booking confirmation by SMS and email within minutes. Booking is free and takes under 5 minutes.

How much does RTA vehicle inspection cost in Dubai in 2026?

The inspection fee for a light vehicle (car, SUV, pick-up) is AED 150. A mandatory Knowledge and Innovation fee of AED 20 applies to all inspections. If you walk in without a prior booking at a centre that permits it, an extra AED 100 surcharge applies. Heavy vehicle inspection costs AED 200, plus the AED 20 fee.

Is online booking mandatory for RTA vehicle inspection in Dubai?

Yes, since June 2, 2025, online pre-booking is mandatory at 27 of Dubai's 28 technical testing centres. Tasjeel Hatta is the only centre still accepting walk-ins without a surcharge. Senior citizens and People of Determination are exempt from the booking requirement at all centres.

How long does an RTA vehicle inspection take?

The physical inspection inside the bay takes 10 to 15 minutes. The full visit, including check-in, waiting and result processing, generally takes between 20 and 45 minutes. Actual time can be shorter if you arrive at a quiet period or longer during peak hours. Booking an appointment in advance reduces the total time significantly.

What happens if my car fails the RTA inspection?

If your car fails, you receive a detailed list of the faults found. You have 31 days to repair those issues and return for a re-test at the same centre. The re-test fee is lower than the original inspection cost. If you do not re-test within 31 days, you will face a registration block and potential fines.

Is the RTA inspection certificate valid for registration renewal in Abu Dhabi?

No. A Dubai RTA inspection certificate is valid only for Dubai-registered vehicles. If your car is registered in Abu Dhabi, you need an Abu Dhabi Police (ADPOC) or EVG-approved inspection. Cross-emirate testing certificates are not accepted for registration renewal purposes anywhere in the UAE.

Can I reschedule or cancel an RTA inspection booking?

Yes. Appointments can be rescheduled or cancelled through the same RTA Dubai app or rta.ae account used to make the booking. It is advisable to reschedule at least a few hours before your slot, as late cancellations at busy centres may result in the booking being counted as a no-show.
