While traffic rules may appear fastidious, they exist for a reason as they ensure safety on the road if followed by all the drivers. In the UAE, transport regulations are strict, with heavy fines for violators of traffic rules. The UAE transport authority employs advanced technology for automatic traffic fine collection. As soon as a motorist breaks a traffic rule, the RTA fines are updated on their vehicle license number or the number plate.

Similar attention to detail is reflected in the conveying of the fine, as the authorities intimate vehicle owners through SMS and e-mails on their registered contact numbers. The owners and drivers can also check and pay their RTA fines online by visiting the designated websites like Abu Dhabi Police, EVG, and RTA portals. An offline visit to the regional RTA Department is required only in cases of serious offences like drunk driving, causing major accidents, and public nuisance on highways.

How To Contest A Traffic Fine In UAE?

The traffic management system in the UAE is robust and reliant. However, getting charged a traffic fine wrongfully is always possible. If you feel that your RTA fine is wrong, you can contest the levied fine with the authorities. However, sufficient proof is required on your part to claim the erroneously charged traffic fine.

  • Register a Complaint -- If you own a vehicle and have been charged wrongfully, you can reach out to the General Directorate of Traffic to file a complaint. You can also contact the support team by calling on +971-4-606-3555 and registering a complaint, although you will need a written complaint subsequently.  Alternatively, you can log on to the official website of Emirates Police, RTA,  or the Ministry of Interior to register your complaint and provide relevant information like fine number, vehicle number, or license details.
  • Evaluating the case -- After your complaint is lodged, a dedicated team will evaluate your case. This team includes up to six government officials: a Deputy General of the traffic department, two traffic control officers, a fine officer, and a legal affairs representative.  It can take up to 5 days for the committee to resolve your complaint. If the verdict falls in your favour, the fine will be waived off. However, if this is not the case, you can still approach the traffic prosecution department.
  • Approaching the traffic prosecution -- If you still feel that the traffic fine you are charged is incorrect, you can visit the prosecution department. However, you need to obtain permission from a public prosecutor to transfer your case to the UAE court. Consequently, you need to be present in the court during the proceedings and present your supporting documents and evidence. After carefully considering the proof that you have submitted, the court delivers the final verdict.

If you are filing a case in court, you should be completely aware of the latest traffic rules and regulations. Otherwise, it leads to unnecessary hassle on your part and that of the authorities
