Travelling from the UAE to Oman by road is a popular choice for residents seeking a quick escape, as the two countries share a border. However, before you set off, it’s essential to familiarise yourself with updated visa rules, documentation needs, and border formalities.

Visa Requirements for Travelling from the UAE to Oman by Road 

Planning a road trip from the UAE to Oman? Before you hit the road, it is essential to understand the visa requirements and border formalities to ensure a smooth journey. 

• UAE Nationals  (GCC citizens)

It’s important to note that UAE nationals (GCC citizens) are exempt from the Oman visa requirements. As per the latest regulations, UAE nationals can now enjoy visa-free travel to all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain. This makes road trips across the region more convenient for the citizens of the UAE. 

• UAE Residents

UAE residents, whether they hold a Golden Visa, Green Visa, Employment Visa, or any other residence permit, are still required to obtain a visa to enter Oman. In such cases, travellers must apply for a GCC Resident Visa, which allows a single entry for up to 28 days. With this, they also have the option to extend the stay by an additional week.

• Visa-Free Entry for Citizens of 100+ Countries

Furthermore, promoting tourism and easy access, Oman has also opened its doors to citizens of over 100 countries by offering visa-free entry. With this, they can stay for up to 14 days. Eligibility Criteria for Oman Visa from the UAE

When applying for an Oman visa, make sure you meet the certain eligibility criteria:

• Apply from outside Oman: Visa applications must be submitted while you are outside the country. 
• Passport Validity: Your passport must have at least six months' validity. 
• Recognised Profession: Your employed profession must be recognised on the Oman eVisa website. 

Required Documents for Oman Visa for UAE Residents by Road

To apply for an Oman visa, UAE residents need to have the following documents:

✅ Emirates ID

✅ Passport with a 6-month validity

✅ Passport-size photographs

✅ Accommodation proof

How to Apply for an Oman Visa from the UAE? 

The process of getting an Oman visa for UAE residents by road is easy and straightforward with the help of the Royal Oman Police (ROP). The steps of applying for an Oman visa are mentioned below:

Step 1: Go to the official website of the Royal Oman Police and click on “Electronic Visa Services.”

Step 2: Now, click on the “On-Arrival Tourist Visa, Express Visa and Entry Visa for Foreign Residents in GCC States” option.

Step 3: Under the services section, click on “Apply for Tourist Visa.”

Step 4: Now, create an account using your email address or log in with your credentials. 

Step 5: Select the visa type, choosing the option “GCC Resident Tourist Visa (Type 29A).”

Step 6: Fill out the visa application along with some required documents.

Step 7: Pay the visa application fees and submit your form.

Typically, you can receive your eVisa for Oman within 24 hours. The processing time for a GCC Resident Tourist Visa is around 3-4 days, depending on your visa type and nationality. It is recommended to apply well in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles. 

✍️Note: It's worth noting that there’s no option of Oman visa on arrival for UAE residents. They can apply for the visa online using a streamlined process.

Cost of Obtaining an Oman Visa from the UAE

When travelling from the UAE to Oman by road, it’s important to be aware of the cost associated with a visa. 

• Oman Visa: The Oman visa costs around OMR 5 (approximately AED 47). 
• Exit Fees: An exit fee of around AED 35 is charged at the UAE border. 

Border Crossings from the UAE to Oman 

You must know about the border crossings from the UAE to Oman by road. The following routes are listed below:

1. Al Darah Border Post 

The Al Darah border connects Ras Al Khaimah to Khasab in Oman’s Musandam Governorate via Route E11. This crossing is a popular gateway for tourists heading to Khasab’s fjord-like coastlines, dolphin tours, and mountain drives. 

This route is short yet scenic, making it a popular choice for weekend getaways. A valid Oman visa is typically required for entry. This post is ideal for leisure seekers craving coastal beauty and exploring rich cultural experiences along the way.

2. UAE/Oman Dibba Border Post 

You can access this via Route E99 from Fujairah; the Dibba border connects travellers to southern Musandam, particularly the villages of Dibba and Zaghi. Through this route, entry is restricted and generally permitted only through advance approval by Omani authorities or licensed tour operators. 

It is popular among adventure tourists for diving, dhow cruises, and coastal treks. Due to its unique access rules, travellers must arrange permits in advance, making it suitable for planned recreational trips rather than spontaneous drives.

3. Khatmat Milaha Border Post

Khatmat Milaha is a well-equipped and highly utilised border crossing on Route E99 that links the UAE’s east coast to northern Oman. The border is known for its streamlined customs process, favoured by both tourists and commercial travellers.

4. Hatta Crossing/Al Wajajah Border Post

5. Mezyad Border Post 

The Mezyad border, accessed via Route E40 from Al Ain, is the primary gateway for travelling to southern Oman. It is favoured by road trippers and logistics drivers due to its less congested lanes and proximity to Oman’s interior. 

This crossing is ideal for those planning long drives across the desert, with scenic and cultural stops on the way to southern destinations. Make sure to travel with your valid car insurance and vehicle ownership proof, as it’s required during the cross-border check.
