The eligibility criteria for claiming these benefits is that a car owner should have an accident-free record for at least 12 months. There is no restriction based on the driver’s age or experience. However, the discount percentage varies with varied periods.

If one as a car owner in the UAE has maintained a clean record with no accident claim history in the last 12 months, the discount percentage they can claim is 10%.

It will shoot up to 15% for all those who have not filed for accident claims in the past two years. Similarly, to claim the maximum discount possible (20%), one has to have an accident claim-free record for more than three years.

Although this policy seems to be inclined toward public interest and promoting safe driving practices across the UAE, it also acts as a catalyst to foster the losses suffered by the insurance companies during the past year.

One of the main reasons for huge discounts (up to 50%) being offered in 2021-22 was little to no accidental damage claims being made due to COVID. This scheme was pursued by the insurers until September 2022, when the losses accounting from a high number of claims began to surpass the profits made during COVID times.

As a result, to put the wheels of income back in place, some of the leading insurers came together to offer higher premium rates on motor insurance. This put a stop to the steep discounting practices that led to heavy losses on their motor portfolios.
