Abu Dhabi Driving Rules: Basic and Mandatory
Here are some basic and mandatory Abu Dhabi road rules that you must follow for a safe commute in the city without any penalties.
Rule1 - Valid Driving Licence
You cannot drive around in any emirate of the UAE without a valid driving licence. This is indeed the first driving rule in Abu Dhabi. If your licence expires, you should renew it within the specified time to avoid fines, black points, and vehicle impoundments.
Rule2- Wear Seatbelt
Another important rule, or rather a safety measure, that Abu Dhabi traffic police has enforced is mandatory seatbelt or helmet while driving a car or a two-wheeler, respectively. Note that the passenger next to the driver should be more than 10 years old. Furthermore, if you’re riding in a car with children under the age of 4 years, you need to install safety seats for them in the vehicle.
Rule3- Car Insurance
To drive in the emirate, it’s mandatory to have valid car insurance in Abu Dhabi. You need to have at least a third-party liability insurance to drive around in the country. Not having an insurance policy in place can lead to 4 black points against your driving licence, a fine of AED 500, and even vehicle impoundment.
Note – While third-party motor insurance will cover all the damages or injuries that your insured vehicle causes, experts recommend comprehensive car coverage in Abu Dhabi. It not only covers third-party liabilities but also your own vehicle in case of accidents, theft, and more. Buy the best car insurance in Abu Dhabi only on Policybazaar.ae.
Rule4- Don’t Drink and Drive
Driving under the influence of a substance is a serious offence. If you get caught, apart from black points and fines, you can even get a jail sentence. Moreover, your vehicle will be impounded.
Rule5- Adhere to Speed Limits
Check both minimum and maximum speed limits while driving in Abu Dhabi. This ensures safety and also saves you from black points, fines, and vehicle impoundments.
Rule6- Jaywalking is Not Allowed
Abu Dhabi traffic police have set another mandate — you are not allowed to jaywalk. For pedestrians, this is a serious point to consider. If you get hit by a car while crossing the road at an unauthorised point, you will not be able to file a police complaint or claim damages from the driver. This is because in this case, it was you who was walking carelessly on the road.
Rule7- Changing Lanes
Don’t change lanes suddenly by cutting right in front of other vehicles. This can lead to a road crash. Rather, use the indicator light. Also, make sure to switch lanes safely by adjusting the speed to match the traffic’s speed in the lane you intend to move in.
Rule8- Give Way to Pedestrians and Cyclists
Give way to the pedestrians and cyclists and wait for them to cross completely. At a ‘Give Way’ sign, you should give way to any vehicle or pedestrian trying to cross the road.
Rule9- Driving in Bad Weather Conditions
Here’s another road rule in Abu Dhabi — you need to drive cautiously during sandstorms or foggy conditions. It is because the visibility reduces, and at times, the road becomes slippery. If possible, it’s better to postpone the trips in such situations. However, in urgent cases, use low beam headlights and turn on the fog lights to increase road visibility. Don’t drive without lights in such scenarios!
Rule10- Be Cautious about School Buses
Some important road rules in Abu Dhabi around school buses are —
- Never overtake a school bus when its flashlights are on
- Don’t speed up or stop suddenly near a bus
- Slow down when passing school premises
- Slow down or stop if required to allow these buses to make stops when needed
Rule11- Driving on Highways
When driving on highways, keep the following driving rules in Abub Dhabi in mind —
- Don’t cross the solid lane markings
- Don’t slow down or stop when you come to the end of a speeding lane on a highway
- Don’t reverse on highways even if you miss an exit
- Don’t try to exit at the end of a deceleration lane
- Never drive on road shoulders
Rule12- Give Way to Police and Emergency Vehicles
An emergency vehicle will always get priority on the road when its sirens and emergency lights are on. So if you encounter an emergency vehicle —
- Immediately clear the congestion at any intersection
- Always maintain a distance of 150 m or more from an emergency vehicle when its siren and lights are on
- Give way to emergency vehicles by keeping to the right side of the road, reducing speed, and stopping (if necessary)
Rule13- Driving at Night
Since visibility is limited at night, exercise caution. Here are some rules you need to follow while driving at night —
- Avoid using high beam lights that could hamper the vision of other drivers
- Don’t look directly into the oncoming headlights
- Use the lights of your vehicle from sunset to sunrise and during the day when visibility is poor
- Use high beam lights only on highways that don’t have overhead lights
Parking Rules in Abu Dhabi
Your knowledge of driving rules in Abu Dhabi isn’t complete without understanding the parking rules. Here is what you need to know about Abu Dhabi parking rules —
- Paid Parking Zones - Most parking areas in the city are paid. You can use MAWAQiF to manage parking in Abu Dhabi. You can also pay for the parking using meters at the spot.
- Free Car Parking - On Sundays and official public holidays, the parking is free in some spots.
- Don’t Park Outside the Designated Spots - Park only at the designated parking spots. Parking in invalid spots, such as in front of fire hydrants or areas reserved for people of determination, can lead to fines and your vehicle being towed.

What to Do in Case of Road Accidents and Breakdowns?
You should always stay prepared for the worst on the road. Here are some things to keep in mind in case of a road accident —
Park Your Car at a Safe Spot
Right after the accident, park your car at a safe spot near the accident. Put on the hazard lights and the warning triangle. Call 999 in case of any injuries and ask for an ambulance, and then ask for the police.
Take Images of the Incident
Take images of the incident and the damage. Keep all the documents, including insurance papers, vehicle registration, driving licence, and Emirates ID.
Inform the Police
It is mandatory to inform the police about the accident under any circumstances. In fact, a copy of the police report is necessary for filing a car insurance claim. Follow the instructions that the police give and remain patient throughout the process. Once you get the report, look for a red card, a green card, or a white card.
Inform Your Insurance Company
Once you get the police report, immediately inform the insurance company about the accident. They will explain the process to file an insurance claim.
In Case of Vehicle Breakdown
In case your car breaks down, put on the hazard lights and warning triangle. Call for roadside assistance approved by your insurance company.
