Stroke- What is It?
A stroke is a medical emergency caused by a disruption of blood flow to the brain, leading to brain tissue damage. This can occur due to a blockage or bleeding in the brain. Common symptoms include sudden weakness, difficulty speaking, and facial drooping.
It is crucial to get immediate medical intervention to minimize brain damage and improve recovery chances.
Types of Strokes
The following are the types of strokes:
Ischemic Stroke
The main cause is blood clots. It blocks blood flow to the brain. It is the most common type of stroke, often resulting from conditions like atherosclerosis or atrial fibrillation.
Hemorrhagic Stroke
It occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, resulting in bleeding. This type is often linked to high blood pressure or aneurysms.
Transient Ischemic Attack
This is a type of mini stroke, which temporarily blocks the blood flow to the brain, with symptoms resolving within 24 hours.
Cryptogenic Stroke
A stroke with no identifiable cause, requiring thorough diagnostic evaluations.
Should You Get Stroke Insurance Coverage?
Essential for Modern Lifestyle: Stroke insurance is essential, given the rising prevalence of strokes due to lifestyle factors like sedentary habits, high stress, and poor diet. Medical treatments and long-term treatments for stroke patients can be costly, particularly in the UAE, where healthcare expenses are high.
Financial security and Quality Care: Stroke insurance provides financial security by covering expenses, such as hospitalization, medications, therapy, and more. Moreover, having a stroke insurance policy ensures access to quality care without worrying about financial strain.
Protection for High-Risk Individuals: For individuals with a family history of stroke or pre-existing risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or obesity, stroke insurance offers an added layer of protection.
Remember to ‘BE FAST’!
B- Balance
Make the person stand and observe if they can maintain their balance properly
E- Eyes
Check for sudden vision loss in one or both eyes; might be double vision
F- Face
To see if there is a droop on one or both sides of the face, ask the person to smile. This means the muscle might have become weak or the patient has incurred paralysis.
A- Arm
The chances are high that the person may have muscle weakness on one arm. In such cases, the arm will drop downward.
S- Speech
The person may find it difficult to speak and lose his speaking ability.
T- Time
Ensure to take note of the time when the above-mentioned symptoms began.
How to Manage the Symptoms?
Some ways to address a stroke include:
Act FAST: Recognize stroke symptoms using the FAST acronym – Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, and Time to call emergency services
Call Emergency Services Immediately: Seek professional medical help without delay to prevent further complications
Stay Calm: Keep the affected person calm and reassure them while waiting for medical assistance
Position Safely: Lay the person down with their head slightly elevated to improve blood flow to the brain
Avoid Giving Food or Drinks: Prevent choking risks, as swallowing may harm the person
Monitor Vital Signs: Check for breathing and pulse, and provide CPR if necessary
Note the Time: Document when symptoms began, as it decides the treatment options and required medications
