As the UAE continues to move towards electric mobility, Sharjah has brought new regulations for EV infrastructure. It lays down standard rates, clear charging rules, penalties for improper use, and more.
The move comes in as the UAE is working to standardise EV structure and support the ever-increasing number of electric vehicles on the road.
What’s Included in the New EV Charging Laws of Sharjah 2026?
As mentioned earlier, the new rules for charging apply to multiple aspects of electric vehicles. Let’s understand each one in more detail —
Uniform Charges for Charging and Waiting Periods
Among the biggest concerns for EV users are unpredictable charging costs and long waiting periods. Sharjah’s law directly addresses both fixed tariffs as well as time-based penalties. The goal is to ensure fair usage and reduce waiting times.
Here are the charges —
- AC Charging (slow): AED 0.7/kWh (kilowatt-hour)
- DC Charging (fast): AED 1.2/kWh
Note: Additional VAT also applies.
|
Important!⚠️ Once the charging is complete, you get a grace period of 10 minutes. If you fail to remove the vehicle afterwards, you’ll be charged a waiting fee. This is calculated at the rate of AED 2/min, which goes up to 1 hour. If you still don’t remove the vehicle, you can face fines of up to AED 1,000. Also, if you leave your vehicle — whether EV or non-EV — at a charging station for more than 24 hours, Sharjah Police can seize your vehicle. |
Fines for Misuse and Non-compliance
To prevent misuse and keep EV infrastructure functioning smoothly, the new Sharjah EV laws introduce strict penalties. These rules apply to both car owners/drivers and operators. Find below the key fines:
| Issue | Penalty |
|---|---|
| Non-EVs blocking EV charging spaces | AED 1,000 |
| Charging infrastructure damages | AED 2,000 + repair expenses |
| Not following safety standards (for operators) | AED 5,000 |
| Installing/running charging stations without licence | AED 10,000 |
What Do the New Sharjah EV Laws Mean for You?
For EV owners and drivers, the new laws bring more structure to everyday charging. They also cut down uncertainty and unnecessary delays. While the rules are strict, the goal is to make charging safer and more convenient for all through mindful usage. With the new Sharjah EV charging regulations, you can expect —
- Better availability of chargers
- Reduced misuse of EV charging spaces
- Transparent pricing
- Safer charging
It’s worth mentioning that the new Sharjah laws are a part of the UAE’s push for cleaner transport. The goal is not just to increase the number of electric vehicles but rather to build a reliable ecosystem.
|
For EV Owners The 2026 EV charging laws of Sharjah bring clear pricing and penalties. However, the standard penalties and charges continue to apply. This includes driving without insurance, which brings a penalty of AED 500 and 4 black points on your driving licence. Whether you’re driving a conventional vehicle or an electric one, insurance is a must. In fact, electric car insurance is especially important for EVs, considering the high replacement and repair costs for batteries and other parts. On Policybazaar.ae, you can find the best car insurance in UAE for electric vehicles. |
