Car insurance plans turn out to be of great use when you get in an accident. If your cover is comprehensive, you can easily claim most of the damages incurred by your car and get rid of third-party liability as well. The only drawback of the basic benefits of a comprehensive car insurance plan is that it does not cover the injuries of passengers who were in the car during the time of the accident. Getting hurt yourself in an accident is a pretty horrible experience, true. However, if an innocent passenger gets injured in the same accident, it is far worse. Car insurances with passenger covers are the only solution for this little predicament. A comprehensive car insurance plan combined with a passenger cover becomes an ultimate protective umbrella for everyone in the car against any accidental mishaps.

What is Car Insurance with Passenger Cover?

A passenger cover is an add-on or a rider cover that can be taken with any comprehensive car insurance plan by paying an additional premium amount. Car insurance with passenger cover becomes equipped to cover any injuries caused to the passengers when getting in an accident in the insured vehicle. The driver-owners of the insured car generally get complete accidental coverage. However, the same benefits are not extended to the passengers. And passengers are almost always there in the vehicle – whether commercial or personal. A car insurance

How Many People are Covered by Car Insurance with Passenger Cover?

Having a passenger cover does not mean that no matter that every single person in your car at the time of the accident will be covered. All passenger covers come with a limit. Any small car with a maximum seating capacity of four people can only get three passengers insured by its car insurance with passenger cover. The coverage increases or decreases as per the seating capacity of the cars. An SUV with a seating capacity of 6 people including the driver can have a maximum of five people covered by the passenger cover.

The reason for this limit to exist is pretty simple. Taking more passengers in a car than its recommended capacity is considered an accidental hazard. If you are travelling with four passengers in a sedan or hatchback with a capacity of three passengers, your car insurance with passenger cover will not cover the fourth person. It can be quite hectic to decide which three out of the four people are to be covered by the insurance in this situation. So, always try to travel as per the regulations for safety as well as convenience reasons.

What does Car Insurance with Passenger Cover Include?

Car insurance with passenger cover works exactly like a personal accident cover. Since the basic benefits of a car insurance plan do not cover passenger injuries, a passenger cover takes care of the shortcoming. Given below are the three major things that car insurance with passenger cover will cover:

  • Costs of the treatment for injuries caused in the accident, Includes all emergency and hospitalisation costs.
  • A compensation amount in case of any partial/total permanent or total temporary disability as a result of the accident.
  • Financial assistance to the beneficiaries or family members of the passenger(s) in case of death due to the accident.

Exclusions of Car Insurance with Passenger Cover

Car insurance with passenger cover may not extend coverage in case one of the following happens:

  • The passenger steps out of the vehicle during the accident
  • If the number of passengers exceeds the stated limit of car insurance with passenger cover.
  • If there are signs of self-inflicted injuries or suicidal attempts in the said accident.
  • If the driver of the vehicle is drunk or under the influence of any kind of drugs/intoxicating substances.

How to Claim a Passenger Insurance Cover?

The steps in involving car insurance claims with passenger insurance cover are pretty much the same as a basic comprehensive car insurance claim. Follow the below-given points to successfully file the claim:

  • Call the insurance company as soon as you can after the accident. Give a fair idea of the situation and the upcoming claim request.
  • If capable, call the police and inform them about the situation. Get an official report of the accident and obtain a copy.
  • If there is a third party involved in the said accident, create an account of the license plate numbers, name and details of the driver, etc.
  • Raise the claim request. The insurance company will send an inspector to assess the damages.
  • Once the approval has been generated, the insurance company will start with the repair for your car, cover your medical expenses and cover the expenses/compensation due for the passengers.

Car insurance with passenger cover is indeed very useful, especially if you travel with passengers frequently. However, make sure that you are only travelling according to the seating limit of the car in question and follow safe driving practices. Neither your basic car insurance plan nor the passenger cover will be useful if you are not following the traffic rules. Also, remember that you can only utilise a passenger cover with a fully comprehensive car insurance plan. Third-party liability insurance will come with this option. Drive safe and be aware of the benefit of your car insurance with passenger cover to get the maximum coverage.
