What is Malaria?

Malaria is a life-threatening disease. The parasites are transmitted to humans through bites from infected female anopheles mosquitoes. You will generally start noticing symptoms within a few weeks after exposure, although the incubation period can sometimes be longer.

In 2007, the WHO declared the UAE malaria-free. Since 1997, there have been no cases of malaria. However, for residents from different countries, there may be concerns, especially if they have a history of international travel.

Symptoms of Malaria

Detecting malaria early helps cure the disease efficiently. Common symptoms include —

  • High fever that may come in cycles
  • Chills and shivering
  • Heavy sweating
  • Headache and muscle pain
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea
  • Cough or rapid breathing in some cases

Is Malaria Covered in UAE Health Insurance?

Yes, all health insurance companies in the UAE provide coverage for malaria. Your diagnostics, treatment, medication, and hospital accommodation are covered, depending on the plan's policy wording.

However, coverage varies widely between plans. Here are some important points to consider —

  • Mandatory basic plans generally cover emergency and inpatient care.
  • Comprehensive policies may offer wider coverage. This may include outpatient care, diagnostics, and preventive services.
  • Some providers may exclude specific treatments, unless they are listed or required under UAE regulations.

Why Do You Need Medical Insurance for Malaria in the UAE?

While the UAE has been malaria-free since 2007, it’s still important to check coverage for this specific disease in health insurance. A comprehensive policy can help you with the following aspects —

Cashless Treatment

When you visit a network hospital that the insurer has appointed, the hospital and insurer settle the bill directly (after approval). This means you don’t need to pay large amounts upfront for serious illnesses like malaria.

Wide Range of Network Hospitals

With an extensive network of hospitals and clinics, you can receive quality healthcare. Using network hospitals usually ensures lower or zero upfront payments, faster claims processing, and access to high-quality specialists.

Unexpected Costs Can Be High

Without insurance, hospitalisation, medications, required tests, and emergency care are costly, specifically in private hospitals. Insurance helps cover these expenses without burdening your finances.

Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive health insurance provides both medical and financial security. It protects you from paying out of pocket for major illnesses. On top of that, it also ensures you have access to quality health services, even during emergencies.

Wrapping Up

Health insurance in the UAE is mandatory. Plus, it is essential, not only for routine check-ups and emergencies but also to protect you financially if you ever develop illnesses like malaria. While malaria is not common in the UAE itself anymore, imported cases do occur. Comprehensive insurance can make all the difference in care and cost coverage.
