What is Hepatitis?

Hepatitis is basically inflammation of the liver, usually caused by a virus. There are five main types (A, B, C, D, E), but Hepatitis A, B, and C account for most diagnosed cases.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is an acute infection caused by the Hepatitis A virus (HAV). The main causes of this disease are contaminated water and food, or poor hygiene practices.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes this liver disease. It spreads through contact with infected blood or body fluids.

Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is caused by the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and primarily spreads through infected blood. The general causes are unsafe injections, shared needles, and unscreened blood transfusions. Besides, certain medical or cosmetic procedures performed without sterilisation can also be a reason.

What are the Symptoms of Hepatitis?

One of the biggest concerns regarding this disease is that many people do not experience symptoms early, especially in Hepatitis B and C. Some individuals only discover the condition during a medical test or routine blood check.

With that in mind, let’s look into the common symptoms —

  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dark urine
  • Pale stool
  • Yellowing of skin and eyes
  • Joint pain
  • Unexplained weight loss

How Can You Prevent Hepatitis?

Here are some tips that can save you from developing hepatitis —

For Hepatitis A

  • Get proper vaccination
  • Always wash your hands before eating
  • Consume clean water
  • Avoid unhygienic street food while travelling

For Hepatitis B

  • Vaccination
  • Avoid sharing razors or toothbrushes
  • Practice safe intercourse
  • Ensure sterilised medical or cosmetic equipment

For Hepatitis C

  • Avoid needle sharing
  • Ensure proper sterilisation during tattooing or dental procedures
  • Avoid blood-to-blood contact

Does Health Insurance in UAE Cover Hepatitis Treatment?

Yes, health insurance in the UAE generally covers hepatitis. However, it is important to check with your insurer and confirm if all variants of hepatitis are covered. In Dubai, screening and testing for Hepatitis C are covered in all insurance plans.

This is a pre-existing condition — thus, treatments are covered post declaration. The minimum waiting period is also usually for 6 months. However, it may vary for each plan.

Why Do You Need Health Insurance Coverage for Hepatitis?

Hepatitis often requires long-term monitoring. Without insurance, treatments can be quite expensive and difficult to manage.

Here’s why insurance is required —

High Diagnostic Costs: PCR tests, blood tests, and imaging scans are done in regular intervals to monitor liver health. These tests, while costly, can be easily managed with medical insurance.

Expensive Medications: Advanced treatments are highly effective but costly. With a health insurance plan, you can focus on the treatment without worrying about the costs.

Long-Term Follow-Ups: Patients may require lifelong checkups every 6–12 months. Insurance helps ease the financial impact.
