## What is a UAE Visit Visa Overstay?

A UAE visit visa overstay happens when you stay in the UAE beyond the expiry date of your authorised entry permit or visit visa without renewing it, converting it to a valid residency visa, or departing the country.

The day your visa expires, the UAE immigration system begins counting violation (overstay) days. This system is managed by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) for most emirates, and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) for Dubai.

Overstaying without a valid visa is a violation of the law and can have consequences beyond fines, such as re-entry bans, deportation, and more.

**Key 2025–2026 Changes**

*   Visas are now available in 30, 60, and 90-day durations. This eliminates the older system of issuing a visa for one duration while permitting a shorter stay.
*   All visit visas can be extended in-country. However, no exit is required for renewal of qualifying types.
*   A new Visit Visa for Work Purposes was introduced, valid for up to 120 days (effective from June 30, 2025).
*   The 5-year multiple-entry tourist visa now permits stays of up to 180 days per year.
*   Visitors from certain nationalities (e.g., citizens of Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, Singapore, the UK, USA) may be eligible for a 90-day visa on arrival.

Note: Always verify your specific visa start date and expiry date at entry using the ICP Smart Services portal. This is because the stay period begins from the date of entry, not the date of issue.

## Overstay Fine Rates: How Much Will You Pay?

The standard overstay fine in the UAE is AED 50 per day. The fee applies to tourists, visit visa holders, and (in many cases) expired residence visa holders. Fines begin accruing the day after your visa expires (or the day after any applicable grace period ends) and continue accumulating every single day until you:

*   Exit the UAE OR
*   Successfully renew or extend your visa OR
*   Convert to a valid residency permit

There is no cap on how much the daily fine can accumulate. Note that the total grows indefinitely the longer you remain without action.

### Additional Fine Scenarios

Overstaying a sponsored visa (absconding risk): In case your visit visa was sponsored by a travel agency or employer, but you exceed your stay, the sponsor can still file an absconding complaint to avoid liability. The penalty amount for the same approximately starts at AED 2,000. However, this amount increases with time and eventually results in detention.

Overstaying a cancelled residence visa: If your residence visa is cancelled and you do not leave within the permitted grace period (30 days for residents), a fine of AED 50/day applies from the day after the grace period ends.

## Grace Periods: What Do the Rules Say Now?

### **Tourist and Visit Visas**

Under the latest ICP rules (effective April 2026), the 10-day grace period for tourist and visit visas has been removed. This means that the fine window starts immediately from the first day after your visa expires. Thus, visitors may leave the country before the visa's expiry date to avoid any penalty.

**Note:** Always verify your specific visa terms through the ICP Smart Services portal or the GDRFA portal before making travel plans.

### **Residence Visa Holders (Expired or Cancelled)**

Individuals on expired or cancelled residence visas get a 30-day grace period to apply for a new visa or depart the UAE before daily fines begin. After 30 days, the AED 50/day overstay fine applies.

### **Dependents**

Dependents of residents whose visas are cancelled or expire receive a grace period of 60 to 180 days to regularise their status, depending on the circumstances.

### **GCC Residents**

GCC country residents visiting the UAE on a GCC national entry permit receive a 30-day validity and a 10-day extension period before fines begin.

## How to Check Your Overstay Fine Online?

You can check whether you have any outstanding overstay fines through official UAE government platforms. Keep your passport number, visa file/reference number, and/or Emirates ID number ready before you begin.

### **Method 1: ICP Smart Services Website (All Emirates)**

All Emirates visa holders can check their fines through the ICP online portal.

Steps:

1.  Go to smartservices.icp.gov.ae (icp.gov.ae)
2.  Select "Public Services" then "Fines and Leave Permits"
3.  Choose your ID type (passport number, file number, or Emirates)

### **Method 2: GDRFA Dubai Website (Dubai-Issued Visas)**

This is exclusively for those whose visas are issued in Dubai.

Steps

1.  Visit gdrfad.gov.ae
2.  Move to the Fines Inquiry" or "Visa Violations" in the services section
3.  Enter the required details and submit them

## How to Pay Your Overstay Fine?

After confirming the outstanding fine amount, you can make the payment through several channels:

### **Online Payment**

Pay through the online platforms through which you check your fines. In case of any issue with payment, you may contact the respective authority.

### **In-Person Payment**

**Authorised Typing Centres:** Registered typing centres and Amer Centres across all emirates process fine payments. If you're unfamiliar with paying through online channels or dealing with complex cases, it’s suggested that you clear your fines in person.

**ICP Customer Happiness Centres:** Pay directly at an ICP office in your emirate.

**Airport Immigration Counters:** Payment is possible at exit points. However, this mode is not recommended as it can cause delays, risks, and missed flights. Always settle fines before arriving at the airport.

## What to Do After Your Visa Expires?

If your UAE visit visa has already expired, act immediately. Here is a step-by-step guide based on your situation:

### **Option 1:** You Want to Stay Legally — Apply for an Extension

If you want to continue staying in the UAE, you must apply for a visa extension before the expiry date. If the visa has already expired:

*   Check the ICP or GDRFA portal immediately for any fines.
*   Apply for an extension. Extensions may be approved in some cases even after visa expiry. However, additional fees may apply.
*   Consult an authorised typing centre or immigration consultant for support.

### **Option 2:** You Want to Leave the UAE

1.  Check your fines via the ICP or GDRFA portal.
2.  Pay all outstanding fines online or at a typing centre before going to the airport.
3.  Obtain an exit permit (out pass) if required. This applies in special cases of overstay or lost documents (read the Exit Permit section below)

### **Option 3:** You Want to Change Your Visa Status

If you have received a job offer or wish to convert your visit visa to residency:

*   Under the 2025 reforms, in-country conversion from a visit visa to an employment residence visa is permitted. In this case, no exit is required.
*   The approved conversion grants a 60-day employment entry permit to complete medical tests, biometrics, and residence stamping.

## What are the Consequences of Not Paying Overstay Fines?

Never overlook the fines for staying beyond your visa-specified period. Here's what consequences you may face:

**Escalating daily fines:** At AED 50 per day, a six-month overstay accumulates more than AED 9,000 in fines.

**Exit ban:** You may be stopped from departing the UAE until all fines and associated fees are fully cleared. Immigration systems at all ports of exit — airports, seaports, and land borders — flag active visa violations.

**Blocked visa applications:** Future visa renewals, residency applications, or Emirates ID processing will be refused if outstanding fines exist.
